African Virtual Memory Project

The mission of this project is to promote knowledge-sharing and historical preservation through the systematic compilation of the collective memory of Indigenous African Populations at a National and Regional level, notably for educators and the younger generations.

The objectives of the project are the following:

1. Historic Preservation

To preserve African history by digitizing and storing electronic media

2. Public Access

To promote the availability of African historical materials by providing on-line and off-line access

3. Capacity building

To train African educators and documentalists on best practices and innovative approaches for storing and visualizing cultural memory information

To develop “homegrown” educational resources, involving cultural heritage institutions, community groups, schools, and technology innovators as the collaborators in the projects

Using a Podcast Intervention to Improve the Academic Performance of Students in Overcrowded Higher Learning Institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa

The first year classes in some the School of Law and the School of Sociology at the Cheikh Ante Diop University in Dakar, Senegal are conducted in overcrowded amphitheaters. Although the The School of Law has the structural capacity to accommodate 1200 students into one class, it consistently enrolls over 5000 new students each year into its program. Students have to come two hours before class to secure a decent seat. (Polgren, 2007) Those who are too far back in the classrooms do not adequately hear the professor's lecture. The majority of students who can not secure a seat to listen to lectures either stand outside of the room, crooning through the windows, or are obliged to review second and third hand notes to keep up and prepare for assessments.

Podcasting represents a new use of the Internet to publish and distribute audio in downloadable formats. Schools are around the globe are offering similar access to lectures converted to Mp3 files. Through the use of opensource “free” technology, Podcasting offers a cost-effective, time-flexible route for students to have daily access to course lectures and thus improve their ability to perform on tests.

The primary aim of the study will be determine to what extent students receiving the Podcast intervention will improve their scores on final exams when compared to the controls. It is hypothesized that students in the podcast intervention group will have higher academic performance than those in the control group. THe research will be conducted by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in Africa and the Association for Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) during the second semester 2010.

Phase I: The feasibility and acceptability of the Podcast intervention with approximately 15 students will be pre-test. Process data collecting technical and pragmatic issues related to Podcast recording, web site access issues, web-tracking of student access or any other technical issues will be collected through the log of the Web Master. An exit interview at the end of this phase will be conducted to assess pragmatic and technical issues experienced by students, as well as the satisfaction or dissatisfaction of using the system.

Phase II: Approximately 2500 Students will be enrolled into a Podcast intervention group during a full semester class at the University of Dakar. Students in the intervention Podcast group will have access to auditory lectures delivered in the form of podcast (using a password protected web site) + standard lecture slides and hardcopy materials.

Assessment & Measures

Academic performance defined as class GPA: This measure will be obtained from the instructor/professor and will be computed using the sum all grades obtained during the current semester divided by the number of grades obtained.
Intrinsic Motivation (IM) defined as the student's interest, perceived competence and perceived choice while performing course related activities.
Student satisfaction; measured using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) - ranging from 1 = very bad to 10 = excellent).
Socio-Demographic information, including age, gender, ethnicity, nationality, and socioeconomic background (i.e.; low income family, parental level of education)
Number of times students accessed the intervention web site to listen to the Podcasting (only intervention group) – by tracking web access.
Process data (Phase I only): Notes / logs will be taken during phase I to assess issues related to feasibility to include information such as: technical and pragmatic issues related to Podacst recording and uploading, technical and pragmatic issues related web design, access or use; any other unanticipated technical issues.

It is expected that this intervention will be a successful contribution in addressing issues related to student overcrowding in higher learning institutions in Senegal and sub-Saharan Africa

Intégrer les TIC dans l'Educ@tion de Base - Le secteur privé : un partenaire indispensable

Dans ce numéro de janvier à mars 2010 de AmCham News, vous découvrirez entre autres le projet de l'Agence Internationale de Développement des Etats-Unis (USAID), « Education de Base (EDB) », en appui à la concrétisation de la vision du Programme Décennal de l'Education et de la Formation du Sénégal mis en place pour une période de 5 ans. Ce programme vise notamment à former 80 % des enseignants du secondaire et 1047 agents administratifs.    

Un entretien avec la spécialiste des TIC au Bureau régional pour l'Education en Afrique (BREDA) de l'UNESCO propose de nous renseigner sur la mission et la position de l'UNESCO sur les TIC pour l'éducation en Afrique à travers l'utilisation de la Formation ouverte à distance (FOAD).  

Enfin, la dernière partie propose différents points de vue pour une intégration des TIC dans l'éducation avec le secteur privé comme partenaire. Cette partie comprend un entretien avec Monsieur Ibrahima Ndour, Directeur de l'Enseignement Moyen et Secondaire Général. Sont également disponible, un article sur l'entreprise africaine Manobi, opérateur et fournisseur de services à valeur ajoutée sur mobiles et internet ainsi que sur l'entreprise Next, intégrateur de solutions, spécialisée dans l'Ingénierie-Conseil, les Télécoms, la Finance et les Projets de Développement.

Les journées scientifiques de RES@TICE sont un lieu privilégié pour :

susciter et valoriser les partenariats entre les chercheurs de la francophonie du Sud, de l'Est et du Nord ;

diffuser et confronter les recherches menées en TICE et en FAD en lien avec les pratiques existantes et émergentes ;

analyser et faire connaître les initiatives émergentes en particulier celles originaires de la francophonie du Sud et de l'Est ;

échanger et construire des méthodologies de recherche adaptées.

Contextualisation d'une situation de formation en ligne par analyse d'une activité de tutorat : une approche par modélisation a l'université de Lubumbashi, R.D. Congo

Parti du constat des échecs quasi récurrents des projets de formation en ligne (e-learning) dans les universités d'Afrique centrale en général et au Congo en particulier, une équipe de chercheurs, dans le cadre des recherches effectuées sur le e-learning à l'université de Lubumbashi en R.D Congo, a effectué une expérimentation de formation en ligne via une plate-forme open source.

Cette étude vise à étudier quelles sont les conditions d'utilisation efficientes d'un tel dispositif dans le contexte local d'enseignement-apprentissage. L'examen des comportements émergeants et des observables principaux ont fait découvrir le rôle majeur que peut jouer un tuteur pour une formation médiatisée par une plate-forme.

Ainsi l'équipe a modélisé l'activité d'apprentissage (UML), avec pour objectif d'avoir un scénario fidèle au contexte local afin de concevoir un prototype informatique selon un formalisme standardisé (IMS-LD) de manière à l'implémenter dans un dispositif de formation pour “contextualiser” l'outil de formation (plate-forme) et garantir un succès à un projet de formation en ligne en Afrique centrale.
